Digital Alphabet Books
When I created my first digital alphabet in 1996, I had no idea how popular these would become. People have had tattoos made from letters in the Alphabet Amandan, hundreds of people use individual letters in their signature files on messageboards ranging the gamut (often linking directly to the images on my site), parents have printed out the pages to read to their children, professors assign them to their Book Arts students as homework reading, and I've gotten dozens of requests for reprints as "real books".
A Digital Alphabet
A Digital Alphabet was the first of my digital alphabets, and immediately garnered attention. It was a Hot Site of the Day (now defunct), and made a splash among typography enthusiasts. It's the only alphabet I've revised. The letterforms have not changed, but I took advantage of new improvements in Photoshop to produce crisper .gif images.
The November Alphabet
The November Alphabet began out of an accident.
I'd been combining serif and non serifed text for a banner headerline when I got distracted by a workplace emergency. When I returned to my desk, I realized I had rendered the two lines of text on top each other - and some of the accidental layerings were very interesting visually. The unique thing about this alphabet is that each letter combination is further described by text that anthropomorphizes the typography.
Animals Can Be An Alphabet, Too
Animals Can Be An Alphabet, Too also grew out of a design accident, and was the most difficult of all of the alphabets to complete and maintain a consistant abstraction of design. I intend to create a second edition of this book, as well, and recreate some of the animals to better achieve that consistancy.
The Alphabet Amandan
The Alphabet Amandan is the only one of the Alphabets that does not use an existing typeface to convey the letters of the alphabet; instead, the letterforms are created out of swoops and swirls. These images are stolen and re-used the least often, but they are the ones that have garnered every single one of the requests to use as the design for a tattoo.
