The 1758 Jirnal of Augustin Hayden (French-Indian War)

His Jirnal from Windsor to Ticonderoga and Back Again

The 25th of may then I Listed into his magesti's Servis.

June the 8th I set away from home to Hartford.

The 9th Day I set from (Hartford) to Farmington.

The 10th Day I set away from there to Harwintown.

The 11th Day I set away from there to Goshan.

The 12th Day I set away from there to Cornwil.

The 13th Day I set away from there to Canaan.

The 14th Day I set away from there to Sheffield.

The 15th Day I set away from there to the North side of Sheffield.

The 16th Day I set away from there to Spensertown on the Bitter rune Lake

The 17th Day I set away from Spensertown to Canter hook. [possibly Kinderhook]

The 18th Day I set away from there to Grenebush. And there we jined the Ridgment we staid til the 26th Day and then we set away from there to Halfmoon.

The 27th Day we set away from there to Stilwater.

The 28th Day we set away from there to Saratoga.

The 29th Day we set away from there to Fort Edward.

The 30th Day we set away from there to Lake George.

July ye 1st Day we set away from there over to the East Side of the Lake and there we stay'd till the 5th Day and then our Armi set away up the Lake For Ticonderoga Fort.

The 6th Day in the morning we Got up to the Narrows and landed that Day. Before night we took about one 150 Prisonors and kild sum. We lost sum but not menny. Lord How [Brigadier Lord Howe effective commander of the expedition] was kild in the taking of those Prisonors.

The 7th Day about Sun Down we set away the Narrows up about a mile. It Being Dark we lay upon our Arms that night.

The 8th Day we set way from there up to Ticonderoga Fort. And there our Armi had to Fight the Enemi Being Intrench and we had left our kannon whare we landed as the Reggulors were imboded and Marched up in about 15 yars of the Trench and the Enemy kild a vast menny of hem but we no not how menny. We do not no how menny we kild of them Tis to be thought not menny bt after the fight being over sum came back to Canaan and sum a Little Back of the Fight and the Rest Lay a long upon the Rode.

The 9th Day we came Back Down to Lake George and Picht our Tents where we Took them up.

There we stayd Till July the 14th Day then we set away from there over to the west Side of the Lake. July the 15th Day our Advance that we had about 5 miles up the Lake upon an Island Disevered 11 french men in two whales bots There Hapen'd not to be But four in one and sum of our men Pursued them and Over Hald thet it had but 4.

Jest as they come up with Them they fired and kild One and Took the other 3 July The 17th Day Abner Owen Died he Belonged to Colonel Limons Company July the 20th Day our Eskort Had Scirmish Down at the Half away Brook. They Lost 24 men 18 found Dead and 6 missing.

July the 25th Day There was a man Hang'd for Theft There was a man by an akerdent Shot of his gun by Striking the lock of it against a log. Having the musele of the Gun under his arme tour his arme so that the Doct'rs kut it of a few Days after.

July the 27th Day There was a man found Dead in his tent He belong's to Capt. Earlehies Company in colonel Limons Ridgment.

July the 28th Day our Eskort were skorting the teams from Fort Edward up to halfaway Brook and the Enemy Lay Ambush for Them and when the Eskort had got against them Enemy Rose up and fired upon them kild 26 men that they found there

There is about 50 of all that is missing And there was about 25 Women kild and taken they Found 5 Dead There was 36 teams them was all kild but one ox and they kut of his horn The (?) was all DeStroyd Se(?) Silus Wels was taken He belongs to Capt. Woolcotts Company in Colonel Limons Ridgment

Aug the 2nd Day Elijah Strong Died he belong'd to Capt Woolcotts Company in Colonel Limons Ridgt Aug ye 5th Day Thomas Bancroft Died he belonged Capt Woolcotts Company in Colonel Limons Ridgt

Aug ye 7th Day Job Bol(?) Died he belonged to our Company in Colonel Limons Ridgment.

Aug ye 8th Day Some of our Rangers were out upon a Scout going from fort Ann Down to Fort Edward and the Enemy waylaid them and fired upon them and kild and took about Seventy as near as they kulde tel and they rekens that they kild about as many of them and took two and our mager Putmon was taken in the skirmish

Aug ye 12th Day John More died he Belonged to our Company and Ridgment Aug the 23rd Day I went Down to the Halfway Brook to scort Teams

Aug the 26th Day there was ten men pikt out of Capt Woolcotts Company for Rangers and I was one

Aug ye 28th Day the Grate Guns and Small arms were fired three times Round for the Good News that are Heard from Capebriton [Cape Breton (Louisbourg Fortress) captured by the English in late July 1758] we heard that it was taken from the french

Sept ye 5th Day I went down to the Halfway Brook to skort teams.

Sept ye 11th Day the Grate Guns and Small Arms ware fired Three times Round for the Good News that we heard from Calter rockway.

Sept ye 15th Day There was a man whipt for Theft and Geting Drunk upon Sentry at the Setlors He Received on 100 Strips To Day and is to Receive as Menny more to morrow. He belonged to Capt. Terners Company in Colonel Limons Ridgment.

Sept ye 16th Day There was a man whipt for Geting Drunk and strikeing an officer The fore said man was whipt 50 strips he Belonged to Mager Griswolds Company Colonel Limons Ridgt

Sept ye 22 Day I went Down to the Halfway Brook and 499 more Provenshals with me to Relive Sum that had Ben there 14 days and as sune as we had got there there was 160 Provenshals sent out as scout for two Days and a 100 Regulars with them and I was sent out with them we set away about Seven of the Clock We went about 3 miles and Slept upon our arms

Sept The 23rd Day we arose about 5 of the Clock in the morning and marcht about 12 miles towards old fort ann and tirnd Back to fort Edward We Got there about 7 of the Clock in the afternune

Sept the 24 Day we marcht Back up to the Halfway Brook

Sept ye 27 Day Silus Case and Jonah Philley Died they belonged to Capt Woolcotts Company and our Ridgment And Lifelit Elsworth was stationed at Stilwater and he is Ded he Belonged to Capt Woolcotts Company and in Colonel Limons Ridgment

Sept ye eg Day Daniel Clark set away from Lake George Sick to Come Home

October ye 1st Day we heard that Joseph Stedman was Dead He set away from Lake George about the 11 of Sept for home and Died upon the rode

Oct ye 6th Day There Came Down a Releaf to the Halfway Brook to releve men that had ben there 14 Days. And we retired Back to Lake George after we had got up to Lake George

There was two men whipt One for theft his Name was Samuel Squirer he was whipt 200 strips he belonged to Capt Whittlers and our Ridgment. The other for being Disobediant to his Captain his Name was Janson Cleveland he was whipt 50 Strips he Belonged to Capt Leeds Company in Colonel Limons

Ridgment Oct ye 9th Day There was 5 men whipt for forging orders in other mens Names There was 19 orders Found and Brought out against them They all Belong to Capt Leeds Compeny in Colonel Limons Ridgment

The 10th Day I went Down to the Halfway Brook to Eskort Teams and wagons. They were Loaded with the sick.

Oct ye 17th Day John Elsworth he Belonged to Capt. Woolcotts Company in Colonel Limons Ridgment To Day I went down to Eskort Teams they were laden with the Artilry.

Oct ye 18th Day I went Down to the Halfway Brook to Eskort the Wagoners with Battoes [bateaux are flat bottomed boats with tapering ends]

Oct ye 23rd Day There Came out orders for Colonel Limons Ridgment to git in Reddiness to march at the least warning Abel Lomus went away from Lake George Sick he Got Down tGrene Bush and Died. he Belonged to Capt. Woolcotts Company in Colonel Limons Ridgt

Oct ye 25th and 26th Days it Snod [snowed] The 26th there came a (?) in hear to Lake George

Oct ye 27th Day and the 28th Days it snod The 27th Day the whol Armi That was at Lake George marcht Colonel Limons Ridgment marcht at the same time Down within about four miles of fort Edward and there in campt

Oct ye 29th Day there Came out orders for Colonel Limons Ridgment to march at three Minets warning To Day there come two men about 7 of the Clock in the afternune There Came two men Down to thee River and Cald it was over against Colonel Limons Ridgment and about 8 men Took a Battoe and went to them and fetcht them a Crost the River.

They had Ben in the wods 40 Days they Come from mornal [Montreal?] they set away with but 10 Days Provishons and after that was Gon they Liv'd upon Tods Stules and akecons and thornberryes There was another Set away from Mornall with them but he Being weak and feeat being sore so that he koold not keep up these two left him 6 Days a go

Oct ye 30th Day There went 13 men out after This that was left But kould not Find Him

Oct ye 31st Day Colonel Limons Ridgment had orders to Strik there Tents for to march. Suneafter they struck Tents they were ordered to pitch them ashore They took them up until 6 of the Clock in the morning.

Novem y 1st Day Colonel Limons Ridgment marcht from about 5 above Fort Edward Down to the fort and took Battoes and went Down about 3 miles Below fort Edward and Incampt

Novem ye 2nd Day we marcht Down to Fort Miler and took our bageg out of the Battoes and careed about fifty Rod and then took the Battoes Down the falls Loaded the Bageg and Set out again and went within about 2 miles and a half of Saratoga and unloaded the Bageg and carried about half mile and took the Battoes Down the falls and ther encampt Novem ye 3 Day

There went about five men into a Battoe and took them to Saratogue and there we all went into them Again and went Down to Stilwater and There we all Got out (?) Anuf to take the Battoes Down the falls Tohoes Got out marcht about 5 miles And then incampt

Novem ye 4th Day we marcht down to halfmune and went Acrost the River in the Battoes and marcht Down to Grene Bush And them that went in the Battoes Got there as quik as them that went upon Land As sune as we had got to Grene Bush we took our packs out of the Battoes and went East about half a mile and incampt until 7 Day

Novem 7th Day we Set away from Grene Bush and marcht Down within about two miles of Canterhook and there we stayed at a hut in the wods.

Novem ye 8th Day we marcht About halfway from Canterhook to Sheffield and we stayed. [Next two pages were used for accounts of expenditures]

The 24th Day we set away from there over to Albany and went out of the Sitty about 4 miles

The 25th Day we set away from there up to Half Mune

The 13th Day I Sent a letter away from Thear to David Elsworth and another on it

The 14th Day we went Out of the Camp and fired Plattoones Twice Round and once att marks and then marcht Back to our tents

The 17th Day there was Sum of The Hilanders in att Swimming in the Lake and one was Drownded and one of the Provenshals Dove Down whare the water was About 20 feat Deep and fecht him up . he had ben Drownded about Half an our

July ye 20th Day There was a man Shot to Deth for Dezarting This Day about Eight a Clock in the afternune thare came out Orders for us to strike our tents att two of the Clock at night

The 21st Day we struck our tents at the foresaid time we set sale about Sun rise We saled within about two miles of the french Landing that Day and Lay upon our Arms that Night

The 22nd Day We Saled up to french Landing Gen'll Limons [Gen. Phineas Lyman] Ridgment was Ordered to land the first upon Shore and as Sune as the Battoes Struck Shore they Run up the Bank and was formd two Deep after all Landed the Rangers was sent along before up to the mils and the french Had an Advance gard

And the Rangers Had Sckirmish with them, they took two and kild three and drove them off Gen'll Limons Ridgment marcht up above the mils and Lay upon there Armes the french Had fel Trees a Crost the Rode and there was two or three Ridgments Left Behind to Klear the Rode.

The 23d Day Gen'll Limons was Set to Cover the Workmen whitch was klearing the Rode whitch the french had fild with trees that Day we got within a mile of the fort and Stay'd that Night the french keep continually firing the cannon and Bums [bombs] att us

July ye 24th Day Gen'll Lymons Ridgment Movved there tents about a Quarter of a mile North of the Rode and Picht them

The 25th Day Gen'll Lymons Ridgment went to making Fasheans [fascine] and Pickets and carrying to the Trenches

The 26th Day one or two of the Clock in the Morning the french Set there Magerzean [Powder Magazine] a fire and took as Much Truck as they could carry and Set off Down the Lake towards Crownpoint in Battoes. majer Rogers and men Lay in the Lake with a Royalle and when the french came a long he fired upon them and they Roed away to the East Shore and Landed and Majer Rogers took 100 Barels of Powder out of the Battoes that they Left.

The 28th Day Major Rogers Rangers took about 12 or 13 Prisoners to Day Gen'l Lymons Ridgment Moved there tents in to Brest works that they took from the french

The 29th Day Gen'l Lyman Gave Out Orders that there should be an Great Retern He forthwith Made & signed by the Commanding officers of the Companies of all the Carpenters Joiners & Masons in their Respective Companyes and also of all Lime Birners brick makers or Layers

The 30th Day These Forsaid men That was Pict out of Said Ridgment was Set to work about Repairing the fort to Day Capt Shelding Died- he Belonged to Gen'l Lymans Ridgment

The 31st Day I sent a Letter Home by Leut Moses Discharged from the armi

August ye 1st Day There was a Scout Out yesterday and was in site of Crown Point fort and see the french Blow up there fort and Cut Down there Apple trees and they Had about forty Battoes & two slups [sloops] and they loaded them and Destroyed as much of the rest of there truck as they kould and Lefdt there fort and this Scout in the news

The 2nd Day there Came Out orders for Gen'l Lymons Ridgment and Colonel Woosters and Colonel Willards for to Stay and keep the fort [added: and one Ridg't of the Hilanders] and the Rest of the Armi to Go forward.

The 3rd Day Gen'l Lymans Ridgment moved there tents about 40 rod west on to Hier Ground To Day there was a man hang'd for Dezarting

The 30th Day I had four Letters from home one from father. The date of it was July ye 31st AD 1759 and I had three more from my brother Moses Hayden one was Dated July ye 30th 1759 another July ye 16th 1759 the June ye 23rd 1759 The vesel was Lancht [The copy says: "to Day we Lancht a vessel."]

The 3rd Day we Set away from there to wooderick falls whitch is about Milds above the Narroues & from the Narroues Down to Ticonderoga is about 14 milds And then we marcht up the Crick about 4 milds about 4 milds and then tirned back to our Battoes about four a Clock in the afternoon and Set out for Ticonderoga fort and Got in about ten a Clock at Night and it Raind very hard

The 24th Day it Snod to Day there Came out Orders How Genl Lymans Ridgt Should march The Invaleads and kows and Bageg horses ware to be Sent forward and One Capt and four Sargt and forty Rank and file with them and Colonel Pason is to march in the front of the Ridgt Genl Lyman in the Rear and the first Leut in the front of there Compenyes And the Capt in the Rear And the Ridgt are to incampt in a Sirkel Every Night [The Copy adds: The Ground to be Layd out by the Quartermater]
